San Antonio, Texas - Seborn Alton Thomas, aged 93, departed from this world on February 25, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Natchez, Mississippi on January 12, 1933, to Dr. Ford Alton Thomas and Tressie Maza Felts Thomas. Seborn was a man of great character who led a life full of accomplishment, joy, and love.
Seborn was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Ford Alton Thomas, his mother, Tressie Maza Felts Thomas, his stepmother, Mildred Thomas, his brother, Ford Felts Thomas, and his sister, Cherry Sue Thomas.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sylvia Lucille Spearman Thomas, his devoted sons, Tracy Seborn Thomas (Amy) and Darrell Mason Thomas (Nancy); grandchildren, Erica Taylor Thomas Nelson (Barrett), Chandler Marie Thomas Elliott (Andrew), Caitlyn Elizabeth Thomas Emmenegger (Nick), David Seborn Thomas, Mason Arthur Thomas, Zachary Pierce Opdyke, and Nicole Qing Li Opdyke; and great-grandchildren Harper Drew Nelson, Holt Barrett Nelson, Lucille Margaret Elliott, and Harris Ford Nelson.
Educated at LaSalle High School in Olla, Louisiana, Seborn pursued a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and later, a master's degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. His passion for engineering led him to a fulfilling career spanning 36 years with Humble Oil, ESSO, Enjay Chemical Company, and Exxon Chemical Company.
Beyond his professional life, Seborn was a man of diverse interests. He was a gifted storyteller who enjoyed the intricacies of model railroading, the tranquility of hunting and fishing, and the discovery of travel and genealogy. He held a profound love for his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his cherished dogs and horses.
In the realm of service and achievement, Seborn was a beacon of community spirit. He served as an Adult Sunday School teacher for fifty years and was a deacon at Memorial Baptist Church in Baytown, Texas. His love of sports led him to roles as an assistant coach for an American Legion baseball team and for the church basketball team.
With a personality characterized by faithfulness, love, gentleness, joy, patience, kindness, generosity, and wisdom, Seborn never met a stranger. He was a man who made friends wherever he went, a testament to his warm spirit and welcoming nature.
Over the past decade, Seborn was lovingly and tirelessly cared for by Nancy Thomas. Her unwavering support made a significant difference in his life. The family also extends their gratitude to the Discovery Village Memory Care team for their excellent care, providing Seborn with comfort and dignity throughout his journey.
A memorial service in honor of Seborn's life will be held on March 28th at 10:00 am at Discovery Village Stone Oak, 21902 Franklin Park, San Antonio, Texas, 78259, with Todd Clarke officiating. A reception will follow the service, concluding at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in Seborn's name to the Alzheimer's Foundation at www.alzfdn.org. Seborn's legacy will live on not only through his family and friends but also through the contributions made in his honor.
Seborn Alton Thomas was a beloved family man, a respected professional, and a dear friend to many. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
