Baton Rouge, Louisiana - Michael "Shane" Smith died peacefully on January 3, 2026, at his Baton Rouge home. He was 59. Born on March 22, 1966, to Dr. William E. and Gay Smith in Baton Rouge, Shane is remembered fondly as a brother, uncle, and friend who possessed a rare Southern charm not quickly forgotten. A generous man of few words, Shane was well-spoken when he cared to be. Serving for many years as the maître d' at Mansurs let Shane express his warm, gracious hospitality and appreciation for fine dining. In his earlier years, he also enjoyed shopping and dining on Chicago's Magnificent Mile. Shane is survived by his sister, Shannon Smith Heully, of Baton Rouge; brother, Todd Smith, of Boulder, CO; niece, Sarah Anderson of Grand Rapids, MI; nephew Casey Anderson of Taipei, Taiwan; and dear friend Robn Cook of Baton Rouge. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Laurie Smith Anderson; and brother, Scott Smith. Shane's family extend their thanks to Hospice of Baton Rouge, Dr. Joseph Benton DuPont, Jr., and Dr. Stephen V. Gordon for all they did for Shane and to Robn for the kind, loving care she showed him for many years. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, January 13, at noon at Greenoaks Memorial Park, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge.
