Larry Grant Henning Obituary

Baton Rouge, LA - Larry Grant Henning, a gentleman cowboy, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord he served on August 24, 2025 in Baton Rouge, LA. Larry was born on July 14, 1938 in Sulphur, LA to parents John Thomas and Edith West Henning. Reared in Sulphur, Larry worked and played at the homes of his grandparents. The Hennings were businessmen, circuit riding pastors, and founders of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church, and the Wests were cattlemen and horsemen, both fostering his love of Christ and agriculture. Larry served in the Army National Guard for 12 years. Following the Henning legacy, Larry graduated from McNeese University in 1961 in Business Administration, and in 1993 achieved a master's degree in Telecommunications from the then University of Southwestern Louisiana. Larry worked for Cameron Telephone in Sulphur, then was owner/president of Louisiana Sign Company, later establishing a career as president of Louisiana Telecommunications Association lasting over forty years, first in Sulphur, and then moved to their Baton Rouge offices. It was there that he proudly represented and served Louisiana's privately owned telephone companies throughout decades of advancement. Always humble and soft spoken, he was a tireless witness for his Lord, Jesus Christ, a member of Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge. He married Debbie in 1999, the woman who would adore him the rest of his life, and there began years of perpetual kindness, deepest respect, and love in abundance. They encouraged each other as they enjoyed every function of their respective careers, always leading each other to walk in the light of the Lord. His very favorite place in the world was New Orleans' Hotel Monteleone with its employees who became dearest friends, and was their happy place even in his retirement. Larry is preceded in death by his parents JT and Edith Henning, and brother Thomas Dayle Henning, Sr, of Sulphur, LA. He is survived by his devoted wife Deborah Shaw Henning and step-children Richelle Sherlock Simmons (Chad) of Mountain Brook, AL, and Richard Alston Sherlock III (Erin) of Highlands Ranch, CO, and was the adored Paw Paw of their children Jacob Sheets (Tenaya Kenner), Katherine Sherlock Churchill (Christopher), Bryce Sherlock, Scott Sherlock, Anne Bonds Simmons, George Simmons, Maggie Simmons, and grandchild Liam Sheets. Larry is survived by his brother Terry Lee Henning (Debb) of Montgomery, AL and his sons William Richard Henning (Virginia) of Prairieville, LA and her son Harry, and Christopher Stephen Henning (Angie) of Zachary, LA, their children, Ricky McDavid (Raquel), Christopher Bradley McDavid (Amanda), Ashley McCulla (Cameron) and seven grandchildren, Trae McDavid, Bo Thomas McDavid, Christopher McDavid, Jr, Alena McDavid, Archie McDavid, Abigail McDavid, and Owen Henning McCulla. Larry is also survived by Linda Stephens Henning, his first wife and mother of his sons. Larry had a very special "granddaughter" Christin Knight of Houston, TX who was always in his heart and on his mind. Larry is survived by and was a beloved father figure and "PaLarry" to David Casse (Krista) of Robert, LA and their children Grahm, Graden, and Garrison. A private family graveside service will be conducted at Henning Cemetery in Sulphur, LA. It was Larry's earnest wish that rather than formally memorialize him, in his honor, please reconnect with those you love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
