Ethel, LA - On the afternoon of August 6, 2026, James Larry Odom (88) went to be with the Lord. He was the oldest of ten children born to Leonard Cecil Odom and Eula Irine Amerson Odom. He was born on September 28, 1937, in Burnsville, Mississippi. When he was 13 years old, his family moved to East Feliciana Parish, where he would eventually call Jackson home. James graduated from McKowen High School and went on to work for Standard Oil and Texas Eastern before eventually opening Big Star Supermarket (now Star Supermarket) in Jackson. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara "Bobbie" Schaubhut Odom, and they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in June of this year. James loved Louisiana because of the food, LSU Athletics, sometimes the Saints, and the ability to be outside basically year-round. He loved fishing for speckled trout. In the spring and summer, you could often find him at Grand Isle, and in the fall, he was often at Pointe au Chien. James was also a carpenter. He enjoyed building several houses and helped his sons build their first houses. He proudly served his country as a member of the Army Reserve. James is survived by his wife, his two sons Jim Odom (Kelley) and Joel Odom (Cecelia), his three grandchildren Jackie Odom, Austin (Victoria) Odom and Julie Odom, his sisters Barbara Odom, Donna Beene (Charlie), Brenda Williams (Carl Ray), Becky Graham (David), and Linda Lanoue (Gene), sisters-in-law Virginia Osborn and Brenda Donze (Jesse) and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Deetie, Dorothy, Dwight, and Danny. Visitation will be at First Baptist Church in Jackson on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026 from 9am until service at 12pm conducted by Dr. Joe Nesom. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery.
