Baton Rouge, Louisiana - James "Henry" Grace, Sr., a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on November 28, 1942, Henry lived a life defined by service, leadership, faith, and deep love for his family and community. He attended Catholic High School and graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1960. He went on to earn his degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1967. Henry honorably served his country as a Staff Sergeant (E-6), earning distinction as both a Sharpshooter and Expert Shooter. His commitment to serving others extended far beyond his military service. As a type O blood donor, he faithfully gave blood for many years, quietly helping save countless lives. Henry began his career with Ethyl Corporation before devoting nearly 60 years to Louisiana Fire Extinguisher, where he served as President and CEO for many years. His steady leadership and strong work ethic left a lasting impact on the company and those who worked alongside him. A man of deep faith, Henry was an active and devoted member of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. He served as President of the Men's Club twice, head usher at the 9:45 a.m. Mass, and was a dedicated member of the parish fair committee. For many years, he brought joy to parish events dressed as the Pelican. Henry's commitment to heritage and patriotism was evident in his extensive involvement with historical and lineage societies. His interest in American history deepened when he began dating Rachel, and the two enjoyed visiting historic sites and battlefields together over the years. He served in numerous leadership roles, including President and board member of the Louisiana Society Sons of the American Revolution and as President and officer of the General Philemon Thomas Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. He also served as a Senior State and National Officer of the Children of the American Revolution and was a member of the National Society Sons & Daughters of the Pilgrims, the General Society of the War of 1812, and the Jamestowne Society. His spirit of service extended throughout Baton Rouge. Henry served as Chief of the St. George Volunteer Fire Department and was a founding member of the City of St. George. He was President of the Shenandoah Homeowners Association for many years, a member of the Federation of Greater Baton Rouge Civic Associations and the Jones Creek Business Association and served on the Shenandoah Crime District. He was also a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge, a Paul Harris Fellow, and a member of the Metro 9 Advisory Committee and Baton Rouge Fire Prevention. Henry embraced fellowship and celebration as King of the Krewe of Romany in 2000, a member of the Krewe of Tucumcari, and a member of All the King's Men. He was also a member of American Legion Post 38 and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He was the self-proclaimed chairman of the rules committee of the MBS Bunco Group and the founder of the fuzzy dice. A generous supporter of the community, Henry was a longtime donor to Woman's Hospital and played a pivotal role in the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair Foundation, writing the check that secured the fairgrounds on Airline Highway — a legacy that will benefit generations to come. He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn Williams Grace and John Mallory Grace, Sr. Henry is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Rachel Austin Grace; daughters, Sarah Grace Brooks (Lester) and Maria Andrade; son, James Henry "Jay" Grace, Jr.; sisters, Alicia Grace Ohlmeyer and Connie Grace Schudmak (Mel); brother, John Mallory Grace, Jr.; treasured grandchildren, Macy Ann Grace, Ashton Michael Grace, and Mallory Austin Brooks; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. Henry Grace lived 83 years marked by faith, service, generosity, and love for his family and community. His legacy will continue in the lives he touched and the institutions he helped build. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate James' life on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at St. Jude Catholic Church. The visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the Funeral Mass at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will include Lester Brooks, Raleigh Ohlmeyer, Stephen McGuire, Joey Culmone, Don Simoneaux, and Earl Breaux. Honorary pallbearers will include Darrell Ourso, Donn McGuire, Mark Evans, John Dabkowski, Elmo Dean, and Thomas Miguez.
