Dr. Gene Cameron Sands Obituary
Niceville, FL - Dr. Gene Cameron Sands passed away peacefully on April 2, 2025, at the age of 80, leaving behind a world with fewer well-timed punchlines—and significantly worse hair.
Gene was many things: a decorated Air Force officer, a university professor, a communications strategist, an author, a Disneyland original, and—just to keep you on your toes—a women's hairstylist. He moved seamlessly between the Pentagon and the salon chair, the classroom and the comedy bit—always with sharp wit, quiet confidence, and an impeccable sense of timing.
He was born on July 1, 1944, in Healdton, Oklahoma, and raised by his mother, Melba, a schoolteacher with no idea what she'd unleashed. Even as a kid, Gene understood the power of narrative—once charging classmates a nickel to ride the merry-go-round by claiming his father was the principal. (He was not. But Gene never let the truth get in the way of a good story.)
While most eleven-year-olds were dodging homework, Gene was working at Disneyland shortly after it opened, taking the bus after school to hock balloons on Main Street. There, he charmed his way into the orbit of Wally Boag, the fast-talking vaudeville star of the Golden Horseshoe Revue, who took Gene under his wing and became a lifelong mentor. That early friendship helped shape Gene's own brand of charisma: quick-witted, magnetic, and effortlessly charming.
Gene earned his BA and MA in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, where he served as president of Sigma Delta Chi. He later received his doctorate from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC.
Over the course of his 20-year Air Force career, Gene rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and built a career defined by range and impact. He joined the faculty at the U.S. Air Force Academy, guiding cadets with warmth, intelligence, and irreverence. He later served as Chief of Information for the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing during the Vietnam War, stationed in Korat, Thailand, where he led critical communications efforts in a high-pressure theater.
After retiring from the military, Gene continued his career in higher education, most notably as Executive Director of University Relations at Louisiana State University. There, he guided the university through moments of high visibility and deep sorrow with clarity, steadiness, and grace. His writing, presence, and steady hand made him a trusted advisor and respected leader.
Later in life, Gene returned to the Disneyland roots that shaped him, authoring a Disney-published coffee table book about his mentor Wally Boag, complete with a foreword by fellow Disneyland alum Steve Martin.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Connie Jackson; his children, David, Claire, and Ryan; his granddaughters, Gabrielle and Grace; and his sister, Betty Embry.
He is also survived by every person who ever thought, "I wish I'd written that line," only to find out Gene already had. He was funny, brilliant, kind—and the voice you wanted in the room when it counted. He built a legacy of sharp words, steady leadership, and exacting standards. The loss is immense. The echo remains. And if he's reading this now, he's likely reworking the last line—for tone.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 12 at 1:00 PM at University United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, followed by a brief reception.
