Frances Cobbins Obituary

Baton Rouge, LA - Frances Walker Cobbins, a devoted mother, grandmother, and educator, passed away peacefully on July 29, at the age of 93. Born on February 27, 1932, in Natchez, Mississippi, she was the first born of seven children to the union of Albert D. and Frances E. Walker. From a young age, she embraced the role of leader and nurturer, qualities that would define her life and career.

A proud scholar, Frances earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Alcorn State University and later a Master of Arts in English from Louisiana State University. She was also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., through which she formed enduring sisterhoods and contributed to service in her community.

Her passion for reading and writing naturally led her to a career in education, where she inspired students in both high school and college classrooms. With warmth, wit, and wisdom, she guided generations of learners through the power of language, helping them find their voices and expand their understanding of the world.

Her love of words extended far beyond the classroom. She delighted in helping her children and grandchildren with their writing, always offering thoughtful edits, honest critiques, and heartfelt encouragement, whether it was a school paper, college application, personal letter, or a Facebook post, she was their most trusted editor and most enthusiastic supporter.

Frances is survived by one daughter, Janice Alexander, 4 grandchildren, Dwayne Carral, Jr. (Orielle), Jordan Carral, Joni Freeman (Eric), Cecil Alexander (Arreanna), one sister, Alva Coates, a very devoted and special Dwayne Carral, Sr. (Sharon) and 2 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Frances, 2 daughters, Lisa Carral, and Elizabeth (Happy) Cobbins, 4 sisters, Lillie Nelson, Helen Walker, Nellie Jackson, Mary (Meg) Hardin, and 1 brother, Albert Jr., and former husband, Dr. Robert Cobbins.

Upon her request, her remains have been donated to LSU Anatomical Services for research and learning. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a library or educational fund in honor of her lifelong commitment to education and the written word.
