Dorothy Amman Hardy of Lafayette died on January 4, 2026.
Born on June 5, 1944, in Monroe, Louisiana, Dottie was the daughter of Frederic Charles Amman, Jr. and Dorothy Turpin Amman. She graduated from Neville High School in 1962 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins College in 1966. While at Hollins, Dottie spent a year abroad in France, which sparked a lifelong love of travel. She was one of a few women who entered LSU Law School in 1966 and received her Juris Doctor in 1969.
Following law school, Dottie served as a law clerk for Judge Herbert W. Christenberry of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in New Orleans. After taking time away from her profession to raise her children, Dottie resumed her career as a judicial clerk to Judge George Bradford "Bumpy" Ware, Sr. and Judge John D. Trahan of the Fifteenth Judicial District Court of Louisiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her first husband, George Washington Hardy, III.
She is survived by her husband, William Francis Bailey of Lafayette, Louisiana; her three children, Donna J. Hartley of Dallas, Texas, Melissa Amman Hardy of Lafayette, Louisiana, and George Washington Hardy, IV of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; her stepchildren, John Holbrook Hardy, David Hill Hardy, Allison Elizabeth Hardy, Jennifer Bailey Frederick, William Francis Bailey, Jr., Christopher Burns Bailey, and Kate Bailey Labue; her beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; her sister, Evelyn Amman Hahn of Atlanta, Georgia and her brothers, Frederic Charles Amman III (Martha) of Monroe, Louisiana and Corbin Turpin Amman of Houston, Texas.
Dottie was an active community volunteer who greatly enjoyed traveling, cooking, and entertaining. Above all, she was a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother who treasured her family deeply. She found joy in art, music, travel, and bringing people together, and she especially cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren.
