Baton Rouge, LA - Clay McAfee Flournoy, a Baton Rouge financial advisor, military veteran, proud father and grandfather, devoted husband, faithful church member, big brother and loyal friend, died peacefully at Baton Rouge General Medical Center on Saturday, August 15, 2026 after a brief illness. He was 77.

Clay was born September 25, 1948, in Shreveport, LA. He graduated from Byrd High School and earned his undergraduate degree at LSU-Shreveport.

He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968, serving initially with the Third Marines and later with the First Battalion, First Marines Regiment, First Marine Division as a gunner in the 81st mm Mortar Platoon.

His service to his country was a formative experience of his life and he remained devoted to helping veterans in any way he could, formally and informally.

He was among the original volunteers with Hospice of Baton Rouge for the "We Honor Vets" pinning ceremony program, which he found deeply meaningful.

Until his final days, he raised an American flag at his home each morning to honor the country he cherished. He was a true patriot.

Clay pursued several professions from restaurant manager to bar owner to big-rig truck driver before finding his calling as a stockbroker. He worked as a First Vice President and Financial Advisor with Morgan Stanley for more than two decades. A renowned poker player, Clay combined a wickedly sharp mind with an otherworldly ability to invest in opportunities others overlooked.

Clay was a natural athlete and played competitive tennis practiced yoga and worked out with weights.

Trinity Episcopal Church held a special place in Clay's heart. A member since 1990, he was elected to the Vestry twice, served on the Trinity Day School Board and was a faithful member of the Early Birds, a group that meets each Thursday at 6:30 a.m.

He was a friend of Bill and blessed by the grace of sobriety one day at a time since June 4, 1990.

Clay often said his daughters, Sarah and Bea, were his greatest gifts in life. They said their greatest gift was having Clay as their father.

He is survived by his wife Katheryn Wolfe Flournoy of Baton Rouge, daughters Sarah Luce Falconer and husband Craig of Agoura Hills, CA and Beatrix Rose Flournoy of Baton Rouge and granddaughter Lydia Baylee Noffke of Agoura Hills, CA; sister Kathryn Flournoy Nicholson and husband John of Birmingham, AL; Craig Flournoy and wife Nina Planchard of Dallas and Charles Flournoy of Dallas, TX. He also is survived by his nieces Helene Flournoy Sula and her husband Michael, Louise Flournoy, Emma Flournoy, Malise Flournoy Cotton and husband Carson, Caroline Flournoy, Mary Katherine Flournoy, and nephew Taylor Flournoy. He is also survived by sister-in-law Laura Wolfe and brother-in-law Philip Elliott of Baton Rouge.

Memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3552 Morning Glory Avenue in Baton Rouge, on Thursday, August 20 at 10:30 a.m. Officiating will be the the Revs. Ralph Howe and Peter Wong. The service will be livestreamed on the Trinity Episcopal Church YouTube channel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Baton Rouge, Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge, Trinity Episcopal Church endowment or any program helping US veterans, especially Marines.

He was a man of honor, courage and kindness.

He was loved.
