Baton Rouge, LA - Clarence Bean, Jr., affectionately known as "Bean", passed away on April 20, 2026, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the age of 85.
He was born on March 20, 1941, in Ferriday, Louisiana, to Clarence Bean, Sr., and Phoebe Lloyd Bean. He grew up surrounded by the values of family, faith, and hard work that would guide him throughout his life. Known for his kindness and steady presence, Clarence brought comfort and strength to all who knew him.
Bean attended Southern University Laboratory School, graduating with the Class of 1959. He later attended Southern University and A&M College before joining the United States Army from 1961 to 1967.
After his military service, Bean built a long and respected career with Shell Chemical, where he worked for more than 31 years before retiring. In addition to his career, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he shared in fellowship and service with others who held similar values of faith and community.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret Vavasseur Bean; his son, Brett Bean (Caronda); his daughter-in-law, Susan Bean; his sister, Carolyn Malbrue; his sisters-in-law, Gail Vavasseur Jones, and Deborah (Orna Ray) Shaffers; his brothers-in-law, Carl White and Benjamin Jones; and his grandchildren, Maitland Elizabeth Bean, Heather Elaine Bean, Blake Joseph Bean, Caelyn Wrenae Zeno, and Bria Delanie Bean. As well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Bean, Sr.; his mother, Phoebe Lloyd Bean; his son, Walton Joseph Bean; his sister, Gilda McSwain; his brother, Wesley Bean; his brothers-in-law, Clifton Malbrue and Joseph Earl Vavasseur, Jr.; his sisters-in-law, Francis Jean Vavasseur Jeffries and Carolyn Vavasseur White; his maternal grandparents, Joshua Alexander and Hortense Chase Lloyd; and his paternal grandparents, George and Margaret Bean.
