Baton Rouge, LA - Bernard John (Bernie) Zimlicki passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 due to a medical emergency during a vehicular accident. He was 84 years old and lived in Baton Rouge. Though he was born a Yankee in Norwood, MA, he had lived in Baton Rouge for 35 years and grew to love the South.

Bernie was a kind and generous man and was dearly loved by his family and friends. One of his proudest moments in his youth was being awarded the Order of the Arrow, the highest honor of an Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Norwood High School where he was on the football team. He received his bachelor's degree in Russian history from Boston College and his master's in finance from Bentley College.

Bernie was a great lover of history, and when escorting friends and family on Boston's Freedom Trail and the American Revolution battle sites in Lexington and Concord, he recited all manner of historical events.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served three years during the Vietnam War era and remembered the day of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy when his base was closed and the soldiers were issued live ammunition. He was a member of the Honor Guard.

He worked at the Department of Environmental Quality for 18 years. He loved to spend his time in retirement engaging in what he called "puttering," around the house, his flower and vegetable gardens (he grew delicious tomatoes), and his swimming pool.

Bernie is survived by his dear friend and former wife of 35 years, Paula Moore Zimlicki of Mandeville; his loving family, sister Linda Zimlicki Owens of Bainbridge Island, WA, and his brother Alan Zimlicki (Aldona Charlton) of Wellfleet, MA. Other survivors are his loving friend, Virginia Moore, Baton Rouge; John (Barbara) Moore of Covington; and David (Gretchen) Moore of Dry Prong. He is also survived by his niece, Nicole Moore of Mandeville; John Moore (Linda Valsdottir) of Cambridge, MA; Romas Zimlicki (Andrea) of Virginia; Rasa Dawson of Virginia; Jenny Taylor (Brett) of Livermore, CA; Gareth Owens (Lynette) of Healdsburg, CA; and Tristan Owens of Bainbridge Island, WA. Survivors also include several great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Isabel Zimlicki of Norwood, MA; He was also preceded in death by Paul C. Moore.

Services will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, 70815, on Thursday, July 30, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m.

He was a member of St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church. Donations may be made to the church at 16166 S. Harrell's Ferry Rd, Baton Rouge, 70816.
