Albert James "A.J." Meek, 84, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away suddenly at his home in the early morning of November 8, 2025. A.J. Meek was an internationally recognized photographer, educator, and founder of the fine art photography program at Louisiana State University.


Born on August 29, 1941, he was the son of Albert Adelbert "A.A." Meek of Ravena, Nebraska, and Alta May Meek of Casper, Wyoming. His parents later resided in Lindsay, California. He graduated from Westminster High School in 1959, served in the United States Air Force, later studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angles, California, and completed his M.F.A. at Ohio University.


In 1977, Meek joined Louisiana State University, where he established the fine art photography department and taught for nearly three decades. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2005, and was a mentor to generations of students. His photographic work has been widely exhibited and published. A.J. Meek was the author of several acclaimed photography books, including Sacred Light, Gardens of Louisiana, Gettysburg to Vicksburg, Clarence John Laughlin: Prophet Without Honor, and The Healing Presence.


He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Belinda Meek, and by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Lynn Meek, and her wife, Rhonda Lynn Mouser, of Baton Rouge; and by his sister, Terre Donaldson, and brother-in-law, Jon Donaldson, of Arvada, Colorado and their kids, Marc and Scott Donaldson and their families.


A Celebration of Life will be held at University Presbyterian Church, 3240 Dalrymple Dr., Baton Rouge, on Saturday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m. (please confirm with the church). A reception will follow.
